Last day at Sea before Darwin

10th March 2012 - At Sea

When we went for our walk this morning, the ship was just passing the western shore of the Gulf of Carpentaria, and we are about 30 nm off Cape Wessel. We are no longer in sight of land but may pick something up late afternoon.

We are expected to dock in Darwin tomorrow morning.

After breakfast we went to a talk on the History of Pilotage, given by the pilot who has taken us all the way up through the reef. It was really a bit of his life story, with a sprinkling of the historical background of pilotage. He was a great speaker and told a fascinating story, interspersed with lots of information relating to the passage we had made.

It also seems that the dream run of weather we had steaming  through the Torres Strait, is anything but normal, and we were fortunate enough to experience it at its best.

The talk ran well over the 1 hour allotted and in the end, they had to stop the questions coming, or would have been there all day. I hope he writes a book, because it is a great story.

After the talk , Carole went off to mahjong and I spent a bit of time in the cabin updating the blog, ready for when I would get the opportunity to post  it.

After lunch, we went to a movie “The Ides of March” starring George Clooney. That pretty much used up the afternoon, and it was back to the cabin to spruce up for dinner.

The cabin steward had continued his new found habit of leaving an animal made from towels on our bed.
